WHAT IS E-WASTE

We are witnessing a rapid growth in technology, even while you are reading this; millions of electronic devices are being manufactured, with the intention of making human life simpler and uncomplicated. Just like everything else electrical have life span. Electronic devices that are intended to be discarded are known as electronic waste or e-waste.

E-wastes are hazardous to the environment as these contains various elements that react with air and water, which is not only harmful for the environment but also affect human beings in form of various life-threatening diseases.

Everything that falls under the tag of ‘electronics’ is a potential e-waste; with advancement, old technology is replaced with new one, for example- Smartphones.

Electronic waste is a grave issue and it requires immediate attention. We are the first generation to be affected with environmental damages and last generation that can do something about the issue. Dumping of e-waste is responsible for serious threats to environment, living beings and nature in general.

For this reason, the best way to repress the fatal effects on the ecosystem in entirety and to save our children, future generation is to start recycling our electronic goods.

WHY RECYCLING?

Protects Natural resources

Most electronics contains non-biodegradable substances that have heavily toxic components like mercury, lead, barium, and arsenic in it. Recycling will ensure these harmful materials are being away from the environment. Also, lesser natural resources are extracted. By making use of already existing products, we are saving energy, reducing pollution, reducing the emission of green-house gases.

Economic Growth

Recycling and e-waste management involves various steps. Refurbishing and creating an entire new product using already available material requires skills and various steps. Production and shipping create scope for jobs. Requirement for diverse workers from varied fields is generated, boosting economic growth.

Saves landfills

E-waste that is discarded and not recycled are dumped and turned into landfills. The toxic materials react with air and water, polluting and disrupting the life of nearby residents by putting them in danger by exposing to various diseases. Recycling save us from unnecessary landfills and waste materials.

Extraction of alternate resources

E-waste technically is not a waste, if it is recycled wisely. The waste carries various valuable materials like aluminum, copper, gold, silver and other profitable substances.

DID YOU KNOW?

  • There are more mobile phones on earth than human beings
  • Approximately only 12% of the e-waste is recycled
  • Every year 20-50 metric ton of e-waste is disposed around the world
  • Average person replaces his/her smartphone every 18 months
  • The landfills carry 85% of waste
  • A child’s mental development is disrupted due effect e-waste have on environment
  • Most e-waste from around the world is disposed of in Asia
  • There are safe ways to recycle a product, not everyone follows it
  • Only 29% of e-waste is handed over to authorized recyclers

These must not come across as just facts but if we dive into it deep, we are heading towards a future which is not safe to even breathe.

As a consumer, we hold certain responsibility to reduce the amount of e-waste generated. A little contribution goes a long way. Following basic good practice will significantly reduce the e-waste.

WAYS TO REDUCE E-WASTE

  • Switch to environmental friendly devices
  • Increase the shelf life: The life span of a devise can be increased by following instructions; for example, storage instruction and following humidity parameters
  • Careful dismantling: the first damage is usually created in the initial stage by careless handling of the product, responsible dismantling increases the potential of the device
  • Repair: repairing instead of replacing will significantly reduce the e-waste that is generated every year
  • Donation: passing on the used device to the one who really need it. Your waste is some other person’s need
  • Authorized recyclers: irresponsible dumping creates landfills. This can be fought by reaching out to companies officially dealing in the recycle business
  • Revaluate choices: Before buying a new product, ask two questions, ‘Do I really need this product?’ and ‘Will I be requiring it in a long run?’

DO’S & DON’TS

Do’s

  • Always look for information on the catalogue with your product for end-of-life equipment handling
  • Ensure that only Authorized Recyclers/Dismantler handle your electronic (i.e. printers, cartridges and other electronics) products
  • Always drop your used electronic products, batteries or any accessories when they reach the end of their life at your nearest Authorized E-Waste Collection Points
  • Always call our E-waste Authorized Collection centers / points to dispose of products that have reached end-of life.
  • Always disconnect the battery from product, and ensure any glass surface is protected against breakage

Don’ts

  • Do not dismantle your electronic products on your own
  • Do not throw electronics in bins having “Do not Dispose” sign
  • Do not keep any replaced spare part(s) from the product in exposed area
  • Do not give e-waste to informal and unorganized sectors like Local Scrap Dealer/ Rag Pickers
  • The product should not be opened by the User himself/herself, but only by trained and authorized service personnel
  • Do not dispose your product in garbage bins along with municipal waste that ultimately reaches landfills
